vermont, my dear

vermont, my dear
This most unusual term of address occurs in Uncle Tom’s Cabin, by Harriet Beecher Stowe. Augustine St Clair is arguing with his cousin, Ophelia. about slavery during the latter’s visit to his Louisiana plantation. St Clair normally addresses her as cousin, but suddenly says: ‘My dear Vermont, you natives up by the North Pole set an extravagant value on time.’ The vocative has all the appearance of being a useful literary device, reminding the reader that Ophelia is a visitor from the north, rather than being a reflection of real usage.
